The number of animals euthanized in shelters each year has declined, but there are still about 2.6 million dogs and cats euthanized annually, according to American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals(ASPCA).

The main reasons cited for relinquishing a pet to a shelter are: owners moving (19%), not enough time for the pet (18%), pet illness (17%), landlord won’t allow pet (11%), cost of pet care (9%), pet allergies (5%), and behavior problems (5%).
In the United States, it is estimated that 6-8 million animals enter shelters each year. Of those, approximately 3-4 million are dogs and 3-4 million are cats.
Each year, 2.7 million healthy, adoptable cats and dogs—about one every 11 seconds—are put down in U.S. shelters.
